Wedding Kissing Balls, flower balls how to

Do it yourself Pomanders~ How to construct Pomanders, also called kissing balls.

3 options for you to create your wedding pomanders.

If using fresh flowers, you will use wet floral foam.

You can also use floral foam bricks which you will cut and shape with box cutter into smaller sizes and round of corners into oval shape. If you choose this option to create your wedding pomanders, you may either start along the edges or start at each corner (4 corners) when inserting a single stem flower, which will be cut to the length you need.

Flowers at corners of foam will be inserted deeper and further than the flowers you will insert along the sides of foam block. This will give a more rounded shape to your beautiful creation. Continue this same pattern until all spaces are filled with no foam showing through and this can be by adding greenery, feathers or whichever decoration you choose. Insert ribbon loop in place where you want handle of your pomander to be, and measure length of how long you want ribbon handle to be. If hanging from pew or chairs, it will be a longer length than if your bridesmaids are carrying them in place of bridesmaids bouquets.

You can use white Styrofoam or green used for fresh flowers. I prefer using the green foam even with using artificial flowers because its softer and easier to work with, where your floral stems will slide in smoothly because it’s a softer material to work with.

You can use feathers, rhinestones, bouquet jewelry, crystal stems from your crystal bouquet, pearl stems or greenery and insert between spaces or to add a decorative touch.

Alternative Option using spray paint: to D.I.Y. Pomanders, Kissing Balls, Floral Balls

Supplies you will need to make your pomanders using spray paint.

You will want to use colors from your wedding color scheme to make your flower balls/pomanders.

Supplies needed to make pomanders: Ribbon, foam balls(green or white), hot glue gun, floral pick/sticks, spray paint, piece of flat foam or board to hold your ball while spray painting it and to let dry.

Spray paint will be used to spray foam ball to create a background color which will match the color of your flowers. If you are using red roses, then you will spray paint your foam ball, red. By doing this you won’t see spaces of white or green color from the foam ball between your flowers.

*1. First you will put a floral pick in bottom of foam ball, this will make it easier for you to paint, without movement and rolling around. Then you will let it dry by sticking it into a piece of flat foam or placing it in an area where it will not be disturbed and all areas will dry.

*2. Cut ribbon to length you want your ribbon handle to be for your pomander, and hot glue to top of foam ball.  You may choose to do this step after pomander is complete, so don’t worry if you happen to forget or skip this step. If it’s not perfect, the flowers you use will cover it. You can also add strips of ribbon at the bottom of pomander to hang down, but decide this before you glue all of your flowers because it will be harder to add your ribbon streamers later.

*3. Glue flowers with hot glue directly to foam ball. You can start at the top where you will glue your first flower, covering the end of ribbon handle that you made. You can make a pattern by alternating colors of flowers, gluing one row of white roses (example) and the next row, glue red roses. This is another decorative design that you may choose to use.

Pomanders are very easy to make, and can be used as decorations for your wedding reception decor. Pomanders can also take the place of pew bows. Your flower girl can also carry a kissing ball, instead of a traditional flower girl basket. Or another idea is to have every other bridesmaid carry a arm bouquet and every other bridesmaid will carry a pomander. Just a thought.

Have fun with it and be creative! You Can Do It!
