How to create a Wedding Centerpiece using Ostrich Feathers
A few options for you to choose the base and holder for your wedding centerpiece:
To want illuminating look of a glowing centerpiece, you can use the 8 hour bulbs sold in packs and different colors. You twist to ignite and it will stay lit for 8 hours. Your wedding centerpiece will stay with a glow, while you dance the night away with peace of mind.
Wow……..What an eye catching centerpiece you will create.
Inset and Holder:
The easiest way would be to buy the plastic foam holders, which will hold foam for you to insert your stems. They are sold per pack, and bottom is made specifically for easy insert into tower vases or any vase with one inch opening only. Whether you are creating your centerpiece with feathers, flowers, or a combo of both. Use supplies that are sold in bulk or per box or pack, unless of course, you are creating one centerpiece for your head or sweetheart table.
If you are going to use the insert above, you will need to purchase floral foam to hot glue inside this holder. I choose to glue but you may want to cut foam to fit securely inside. I use green foam which is easier for me to work with, compared to white. You have the choice of working with foam bricks, pre-cut foam circles or purchasing a sheet of Styrofoam and cut out the circles yourself.
You can also use bouquet holders. They are on eBay in bulk. Look for buy it now, if you don’t want to go through the bidding process on eBay. Whichever insert you use, is entirely up to you and what base you will choose. If you choose bouquet holder, make sure the stem will fit into your vase. After you sort this out, you can being adding feathers and flowers. Get your wire cutters ready so we can measure and cut length of stems.
Make sure your centerpiece is in proportion to the size of the tables you chose. The scale of your centerpiece may look small on your reception tables in a large ballroom, compared to sizing it from your kitchen table, where you are creating it.
Some may choose to start inserting feathers from the top, creating the height that you want and building down, and others may feel more comfortable starting with width from bottom, building up to desired height.
Ready to Rock and Roll, Let’s Begin:
I’m starting from bottom to see how wide I want the centerpiece to be. Once completed and measured, this centerpiece will be my model to create the remainder centerpieces.
1. Insert long feather stem into foam all around, creating your first bottom layer.
2. If needed clip stems shorter than first layer and insert above and around, to create your second layer.
3. Continue this process until you reach top of centerpiece. For height, don’t cut stems anymore and insert in center. Step away and look from a distance when you are getting close to completion. If a stem isn’t long enough, there is an easy fix. All you have to do is hot glue bottom of stem to a floral pick, which will give you the height you want. It will all be covered when your centerpiece is filled and full.
You are performing repetitive steps, but its simple and easy, especially after you create your first model, with measurements of your choice. The instructions are to create layers, and fill centerpiece without having any spaces where you can see through.
*If your decorating budget only allows you to spend on cheaper vases, and inexpensive feathers, the instructions will be similar being that you are replicating from a grand design, but not spending a grand dime. Ostrich feathers are fluffy and full, which help to fill spaces when creating your centerpiece. You might be satisfied with mixing half ostrich and half peacock feathers, if it will save you money.
Insert throughout centerpiece as shown above, if you like.
Floral inserts sold by the bunch~ very inexpensive, many colors, shapes, sizes and finishes.
Use feathers as accents in your bridal bouquet or put them in other areas of your wedding decor.
